Disney Renaissance

If you grew up in the 90s, you probably remember a time when every Disney animated movie was a really big deal.  Each movie was a feast for the eyes and ears.  They had beautiful hand drawn animation that was stylish, charming and expressive.  Also, their soundtracks were more reminiscent of Broadway musicals than animated movies.  Years later that era of Walt Disney Feature Animation from 1989-1999 is referred to as the “Disney Renaissance”.  These were the ten movies that were released during that time:

  • The Little Mermaid (1989)
  • The Rescuers Down Under (1990)
  • Beauty and the Beast (1991)
  • Aladdin (1992)
  • The Lion King (1994)
  • Pocahontas (1995)
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
  • Hercules (1997)
  • Mulan (1998)
  • Tarzan (1999)

While not all stories were original, the style and spectacle that Disney presented them with introduced a new generation to these classic tales that has had a lasting effect.  Current Disney Princesses Ariel, Belle, Mulan, Jasmine and Pocahontas all come from this era.  Classic songs such as “Under the Sea”, “Be Our Guest”, “Circle of Life” and “A Whole New World” are instantly recognizable.  Beauty and the Beast has seen a live action remake and Mulan is scheduled for one in 2019.  With the great success Disney has enjoyed since, it might not have been possible without that decade of creative brilliance.
